About Paediatric Osteopathy
Osteopaths who specialise in Paediatric Osteopathy use specific gentle techniques to treat children from birth through to adolescence to restore, maintain and support health and wellbeing.
Infants can have stresses inflicted on their bodies from pre-birth posture inside the womb as well as the stress of the birth process. As an infant is developing at such a quick rate, any restrictions can largely impact the behavior as well as the development of a child. Paediatric Osteopaths have a highly developed sense of touch which they use to find and treat restrictions in a child’s body.

Osteopathy for Children of All Ages

- For older children, we use an osteopathic approach – to help with for asthma, constipation, recurrent otitis media/sinusitis, and more.
- In adolescent patients, the osteopathic approach can be beneficial to address dysmenorrhea, sports injuries including concussions, as well as other musculoskeletal pain, dysfunction and other complaints from headaches to low back pain.
Using a holistic case history to complete a time line understanding of the patient’s problems we hope to understand, diagnose, treat and manage a wide variety of issues.
Paediatric Osteopathy and Child Development
Babies and young children can have some developmental difficulties due to pressures, strains and tensions experienced during the birthing process. This might occur for instance, if the baby was premature, if forceps or ventouse were used to aid the baby passing through the birth canal, if the umbilical cord got caught around the baby’s neck or body.
During the birth process, babies’ cranial bones allow for them to move in order to squeeze through the birth canal, the bones then move back to their normal position over a few days after birth. This process usually occurs due to sucking and movement of the jaw and crying. However, sometimes the cranial bones do not move to the normal position and can lead to some abnormal compressions in the skull.
As children are growing and developing they go through growth spurts, which can put stress on the joints and ligaments and bones. Some issues that children can develop are glue ear, scoliosis and growing pains.
Visiting a paediatric osteopath can make a profound difference for babies, children and parents.
FAQ
Is Osteopathy safe for babies?
Paediatric Osteopathy uses very soft and painless techniques to release and relieve existing tensions in the child’s body. These techniques used are extremely gentle and harmless.
What to expect in a Paediatric Osteopathy treatment session?
An Osteopath will begin by taking a detailed case history, asking the parent questions about the pregnancy, birth and symptoms. They will carry out a physical examination and assess movement and reflexes in order to make a diagnosis and create a treatment protocol.
Treatment will primarily aim to calm and relax the baby or child. It will help with relieving muscle tension and irritability, improve blood circulation, improve sleeping habits, improve feeding and digestion problems, improve joint mobility, rehabilitate after injury and ease developmental disorders and growing pains.
Occasionally it may be necessary to refer a child to a different professional such as your health visitor or general practitioner, in which case with your permission we can contact them for you.
Children generally tend to respond very quickly to osteopathic treatments as the young body’s drive for health and vitality is strong.
