Osteopathy for Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow in Dubai
Elbow pain can make everyday tasks like lifting or turning doorknobs agonising. If you’re in Dubai and struggling with aching on the outer or inner side of your elbow, you’re not alone.
Tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis) causes pain on the outside (lateral) elbow from overuse of the forearm extensor tendons, while golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) causes pain on the inner (medial) elbow from overuse of the forearm flexor tendons.
We understand how frustrating this can be. At our Al Wasl Road clinic, expert osteopath Thomas Wynn-Jones offers a natural, hands-on approach to elbow pain treatment, focusing on gentle, drug-free techniques to restore comfort and function.

Understanding Tennis and Golfer’s Elbow
The elbow joint is a hinge joint made of three bones (humerus in the upper arm, and radius/ulna in the forearm) with bony bumps on each side called epicondyles. On the outside of the elbow is the lateral epicondyle, where the forearm extensor muscles attach.
Overuse of these muscles leads to lateral epicondylitis (tennis elbow), causing pain on the elbow’s outer side. On the inside of the elbow is the medial epicondyle, where the forearm flexor muscles attach.
Overuse of these flexor tendons leads to medial epicondylitis (golfer’s elbow), causing pain on the elbow’s inner side. Both conditions involve tiny microtears or degeneration of the tendon tissue from chronic overuse.

Common Causes of Elbow Tendon Pain
Both tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow are types of repetitive strain injuries (RSI). They usually arise when the same wrist and arm motions are repeated too often. Common triggers include:
Repetitive movements
Actions like swinging a racket, hammering nails, using hand tools, or typing many hours can overwork the forearm muscles.
Overuse
Occupations or hobbies that involve gripping, lifting or twisting (e.g. painting, plumbing, cooking) put extra stress on elbow tendons.
Poor biomechanics or technique
A bad tennis swing, improper lifting technique, or poorly setup workstation can concentrate strain on the elbow. Studies note that awkward wrist postures and unskilled techniques increase the risk of lateral epicondylitis.
Muscular imbalance and posture
Weak shoulder/arm muscles force the elbow tendons to compensate. Likewise, slouching or rounded shoulders can increase tension in the forearm muscles, worsening elbow strain.
Age and health
As we age, tendon tissues lose elasticity, and conditions like arthritis or diabetes can predispose one to tendon injury.
Osteopathic Treatment by Thomas Wynn-Jones
Thomas Wynn-Jones combines years of experience with a holistic, hands-on osteopathic approach. Treatment is always tailored to you, addressing not just the elbow but the whole kinetic chain (shoulder, spine, posture) that affects it. Key aspects of his elbow treatment include:
Soft Tissue Therapy
Deep massage, myofascial release and stretching to relieve tight forearm muscles. This eases tendon tension and encourages healthy blood flow to the injured area.
Joint Mobilisation
Gentle mobilisation or manipulation of the elbow (and related joints, such as the wrist, shoulder or spine) to improve mobility and reset joint mechanics. This can reduce pain and restore normal movement.
Biomechanical Correction
Careful assessment of your arm and body mechanics. Thomas will identify and correct any imbalances or misalignments in the shoulders, neck or spine that might be contributing to elbow strain.
Postural Rehabilitation & Load Management
Advice on posture and ergonomics (such as workstation setup or sport technique) to reduce future strain. You’ll also get a personalised exercise programme to gradually strengthen the forearm and shoulder muscles, plus guidance on how to modify or pace activities to allow healing.

FAQs about Tennis Elbow and Golfer’s Elbow
What is tennis elbow (lateral epicondylitis)?
Tennis elbow is an overuse injury of the outer elbow. It involves microtearing of the tendon that attaches the forearm extensor muscles to the lateral epicondyle. Patients feel pain or burning on the outer elbow, especially with gripping or wrist extension.
How is golfer’s elbow different from tennis elbow?
Golfer’s elbow (medial epicondylitis) affects the inner elbow tendons, whereas tennis elbow affects the outer elbow. In golfer’s elbow, the pain runs along the inner side of the elbow and forearm when bending the wrist or grasping. In tennis elbow, the pain is on the outside of the elbow during wrist extension.
What causes tennis elbow and golfer’s elbow?
Both are caused by repetitive strain on the forearm. Common causes include gripping or twisting motions (like tennis, golf, racket sports, typing or manual labor), poor technique or posture, and muscular imbalances. Essentially, overusing the wrist/forearm against resistance leads to tiny tendon tears and inflammation.
Is tennis elbow a repetitive strain injury (RSI)?
Yes. Tennis elbow is a form of RSI caused by repeated arm and wrist movements. Any activity that repeatedly flexes or extends the wrist (with force) can trigger it. The key is that the tendon is overloaded by continual, strenuous use.
How can osteopathy help with tennis elbow?
Osteopathy can greatly relieve tennis elbow symptoms. An osteopath uses hands-on care (soft tissue massage, joint mobilisation and alignment work) to reduce pain and restore function. They also correct postural issues and teach exercises to prevent recurrence. This non-invasive approach speeds recovery and addresses the root causes of your elbow pain.
